It turns out, I haven't been running on my SSDs for the last 12y or so. I've been using on on everywhere and systemd was reporting that fstrim.timer is running, and I never bothered to check if it was actually doing something.

It turns out that the dm-crypt guys have made TRIM an opt-in feature, because empty space will no longer be random, more on:

And I've only discovered this TRIM "issue" only because I have been researching BTRFS subvolumes as an alternative to LVM volumes and landed on the question of "how does one deal with SWAP on BTRFS?"

Oh boy, what a ride.
