In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
The Senate of Romania just passed a new law that forces all internet and telecom providers to record all encrypted and un-ecrypted traffic, on their cost, and also provide a way for the Romanian Intelligence Service to extract the data "as needed".
The new 100 page law was provided for review 10 minutes before the session and it was passed after 30 minutes of "debate". But there is good news...

@walter Intelligence services in the Netherlands are also currently calling for the repeal of some of their safeguards "because of Ukraine": https://www.volkskrant.nl/nieuws-achtergrond/inlichtingendiensten-grijpen-oekraine-crisis-aan-om-bevoegdheden-uit-te-breiden~b8d270d93/
@VincentTunru, of course they do.

@walter
Woah, the people who wrote the law are not Romanian? Bad news!
In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
@cjd, no, they are just incompetent and my hunch is that they didn't read relevant papers and ended up using some slang words that a geek might use on the internet, instead of using actual words that officially exist in our language.
And of course, if you find anything on the internet, it must be true so... they've just used the wrong technical words.
re: In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
@walter so they're catching up to the US?
re: In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
@wolf480pl @walter
AFAIK US does not have data retention laws, it's just that AT&T is an evil company who will sell out their customers for a nickle.
re: In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
@wolf480pl @walter
Yes, because AT&T doesn't care about their customers' privacy and the NSA offers them money. Probably also threatens to call the IRS and have them audited if they don't play ball, this is a thing.

@redchrision can you take a look at the text and tell us if this law was originally written in Romanian or if it's a shoddy translation?
If lawmakers are voting for bills which were slipped under the door by foreigners then there's a big problem.

> The European Commission subsequently sued Romania in 2011 for non-implementation, threatening Romania with a fine of 30,000 euros per day
> The Romanian parliament passed a new law in 2012 [...] law too was declared unconstitutional by the CCR

Apparently that one is dead, this is something different.
re: In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
@cjd, as I saind in the other thread, it's probably just a botched translation on their part.
If anyone wants to take a stab at this, here's a link to the law in question, L532/2021 and all the history and changes; Oh... and of course, all you get is thousands of scanned pages, no diffs or patches in sight.

@cjd, and there is one other thing that people in this thread might not know:
The current prime minister is a retired military general that participated in the Bosnian, Afganistan and Iraq wars:

And he was instaded ofter the old prime minister was dismissed by his own party, both of them from the same political party:

@muppeth, I actually have no idea what makes a telecom provider.
I'm still waiting for a good summary and explanation; because I don't legalese and it's a pain to read any of those documents, you have to really know how to read them.
@clacke, I've heard that they have a similar law in Denmark, there was something it beings against an EU directive, but I don't know the details or if it is true.

@rathantara, hai că "partidu' dă aitiști" a depus deja contestația la CCR:

@walter how can an ISP provide a way to extract the data that has been encrypted by any app not under the control of the ISP?
In Romania 2022 is the new 1984
The good news is the fact that the law will be challenged at the Constitutional Court of Romania and probably it will never be applied.
Experts say it has many issues, but the most obvious one is that they've used words that don't exist in the Romanian language.
They've probably used #GoogleTranslate to get the translation for "encrypted" and they got a word that doesn't exist in our language: "cripat".
Thank you #Google, #DoNotBeEvil
