In a parallel universe, where John Deere is a Russian company, those UA farmers can't tow away those tanks. If they didn't disconnect in time or they've accidentally enabled the connection, there is no more towing for them. With everything on the internet, they've got a and a

We're not in that universe, so we only have a , but are you sure you want to give up on your popcorn in time of war?

@walter so very much this. Well put.

@rysiek @walter

Indeed. Also that we are moving towards a society where there's no need for war for this kind of stuff. I will just happen everywhere, every day and on personal, individual levels when people are out of line on something.

@walter

This works both ways. Russian troops have stolen quite a lot of modern farming tech, like combine harvesters and tractors from Ukraine. Most ended up in Chechnya, which we know because of GPS tracking. Some of them were also equipped with immobilizers and on request of their legal owners they are now useless to the thief.

@kravietz

No doubt machines can be reverse engineered or re-engineered to make something that works (even if not with all its previous functionality)

Alternatively they can break them and sell the parts (some stuff maybe not so easy) and/or modify parts to fit different machines.

Theres got to still be good money to be made by messing about with kit worth that much money
@walter

@dazinism

Sure but that's always going to be way more expensive and pain in the ass way that just buying the tractor legally — for example, due to lack of spare parts. By the way, Ukrainian farmers modded tractor firmware in the past already but that was generally tolerated because they got them legally.

@walter the fact that every single Tesla owner is at the mercy of a 50 year old toddler will also be popcorn worthy some day.

@walter I have found an addednum of sorts today: Deere has remotely disabled ~$5M worth equipment stolen by invaders.
